They say 'it takes a village' to fulfill any goal. International Headache Center is no exception! Get to know each member of our little village, their goals, and their inspirations.
The more we speak with our patients, the more we have come to realize that general brain health and neurological well-being are concepts that are not well understood. Our brains need to be maintained and looked after just like the other parts of our bodies!
Let’s think about it this way: we visit our primary care physician at least once a year to make sure that all of our parts are functioning normally, we use sunscreen to prevent sunburn and harmful UV rays, we take vitamins to make sure that we’re giving our bodies the nutrients we need. All of these things can be thought of as preventive medicine. We do them to prevent more harmful conditions from forming. Neurology & brain health deserve our preventive efforts as well! The brain is so important and it surprises us that medical training for neurologists has focused on reactive neurology instead of proactive or preventive neurology. There are things all of us could be doing to improve, postpone, or even prevent neurological conditions (things like migraines, seizures, dementia, and stroke). These lifestyle modifications require commitment and maintenance of healthy habits - easier said than done, we know, but the long term results are worth it!
Here at IHaC, we’re kicking off a new initiative that promotes preventive neurology. Our central aim is to encourage members (and non-members) to set up a wellness visit. Such a visit ascertains modifiable risk-factors and sets forth an action plan to keep your brain as healthy and highly functioning as possible - for as long as possible. That’s right, getting care by a neurologist BEFORE the onset of a neurological problem can keep your brain healthy - - pretty simple when you think about it. During your visit, we work together to create an actionable plan tailored to you. Beyond this, we also try to educate our community about basic lifestyle habits that can greatly affect brain health and we put our patients in touch with specialists from a variety of disciplines that can round out headache treatments in a holistic way.
In the near future, we hope to take our mission to the streets! We want to participate in local and national events that inform and inspire people to take care of their brains the way they take care of their bodies. We’re working on partnering with other organizations that promote this same goal and finding ways to make preventive neurology a household term.
